JV - Digipak Cover Ideas

  • The two designs above both incorporate the same ideas in which the location, London, is seen as the most prevalent.
  • The contrasting colours relate to the music in which one depicts forlorn colours to link with calm music but the altered threshold on the second picture juxtaposes the other

ADVERTISING

      • Opposed to the digipak designs, the advertisement is for a 1 page spread in a magazine and instead of the location being prevalent, the record company, TIGERMILK RECORDINGS is the main motif which the target audience see.

Group: Animatic

The purpose of this task was to get an idea of what angles, distances and movement we need and the variety of shots needed to get an A.
Firstly we drew the narrative in order showing the different locations and the narrative in them. Then we filmed the sequence with a school camera and tripod, before editing it on Premiere. We also added in some stills from the internet, and a piece of footage from a previous school visit to Brighton, of the Ferris wheel, which is meant to represent the London eye.
From completing this task, we learnt that we need a lot more footage than we had planned, and more different angles. Nearly all the shots are tracking shots, but we also need to include more than just tracking in every shot, for example canted angles or close-ups.

Group - Music Video Shoot

We plan to film mainly during half term as it provides us with a lot of free time in which to film, this also lets us to get a range of different shots like time lapses as we have the freedom to do so.
The dates in which we plan to film are: Monday - 28-10-13 and Thursday 31-10-13, by filming on these dates it will provide us with enough footage to collaborate together for a large chunk of our production.
In terms of cast we are planning to use casts provided by Connor which could be subject to change as we feel if we perform these roles then there would be less verisimilitude and downgrade the quality of our music video. By using someone older then it is easier for them to understand certain directions and acting roles.
Obviously we have to think about certain risks and difficulties that we will face, this will include things such as rain in which the weather conditions will not be the best on the day but our similar which is needed for continuity; certain precautions we will have to take is protecting the equipment during filming by filming under shelter be it a building or an umbrella.

JV - Concept Development, Itininerary

The following route in which we are taking to London will allow us to cover enough vast space to look at a lot of popular monuments and areas which are easily recognised and appeal to a larger audience.
Furthermore, the different areas and locations means the shots in which they are angled and framed in are varied for example, walking down to Westminster Abbey towards Big Ben and the London Eye will be good for over the shoulder shots and longshots into the distance however going to places like SOHO  and Chinatown can provide a lot of close ups from the different markets and shops that are there.
In order to create verisimilitude and continuity, the days in which we go must have similar weather conditions, preferably on a day in which there is no rain which causes a lot of problems in terms of risk assessments but on a cloudy day which truly reflects the usual conditions in the UK and especially London.

As seen above this is the plan for the day in terms of where we are going which provides an easy to follow route which is convenient and provides many different places which are on the way such as St James' park and the Mall which are directly next to each other on the way to Buckingham Palace.

Shot ideas;
Long shot with monument in background
Tracking shots
Close ups, street performances, market stalls/stands - Camden Market

LF: Update

After just editing the Brighton footage and gaining an idea on what shots were good and shots we liked, we have been introduced to the software 'After Effects'. As we want to use slow motion, after effects can make extra slow motion footage out of a camera that is incapable. Furthermore, picking key points in the screen and making a border, can set the footage to a smooth track,  rather than a handicam track, so it just takes out the unsteadiness. Also we have been looking at adding saturation and desaturation to the image to create moods. This will help our music video greatly in achieving a different colour between the two narratives and help the audience understand it better.

LF: Brighton Footage

Group: Pitch

Feedback: Class Presentation

  • When presenting the pitch to the class one response was to go to the location and get some shots and a location reccie that will determine whether the location is suitable to film or not.
  • We need to make it clear to the audience that there is a clear difference in the two narratives and we need to make sure the audience understand that.
  • Is the track to long and will we have enough footage to fill the 4.14 minutes that our track is?
  • Will we be able to find an actor in time to start filming?
  • Getting up to London early enough to catch the sunset in the right location is going to be a difficulty
  • The class suggested that we need to have an idea of what we want to include on the advertising side of the project. What image? What font?
  • The teacher asked if we know enough about post production effects to create the two different saturations of the narratives.
Targets:

  • Go to London in the next few days to capture some shot ideas and some footage.
  • Learn about after effects with a media teacher to understand the different effects you can achieve in the software.
  • We may need to cut the track down a little bit. There is about a 1 minute repetitive part of the track which wouldnt hurt being cut.
  • We need to find the right actors - a couple that are together in a serious relationship and a bit older than ourselves to make the video more authentic and realistic.
  • We need to know exactly where we are going to go in London so we are going top get a map and circle the different locations we want to shoot at so time is used effeciently.

Group - Story Board

  • The story board shown above is the basic scene framework of our current concept. It begins with a few establishing shots of the location and life that the poor protagonist is living in. The narrative then moves on to the life of this poor man, putting the audience into his eyes and living his life.
  • The narrative is about the highly contrasting lives of society, with each social class seeing one-another and the camera changing into that individuals shoes. The storyboard gives the group an idea of what it may look like when finished and will help to identify any weak areas.

JV - Digipak Analysis

Tuesday 1 October 2013

feedback - 1 October

Some very competent analysis on the blog. The presentation of some of the posts needs work in that images are needed. There are a few posts missing which need to be uploaded asap. I like the development of your concept, you will need to do a location reccie next though to ensure your locations are realistic.

LF: Treatment

  • The music video is going to start with a deprived poor citizen of London, waking up shot in a sequence of close ups and birds eye view.
  • He walks out the house into the Camden area which is seen as run down and not very classy. There will be a variety of shots that reinforces the idea he is poor; such as worms-eye and tilt up. There will also be establishing shots of London's landscape. We will have POV shots of the deprived citizen walking through the market, with the large crowds just walking by and not taking notice of him.
  • Then there will be a crowd shot and he will make eye contact with someone that is of a higher class than himself. Over the shoulder shots, POV and Tracking shots will be used to switch character then the new character will take us through the motions of being a middle class citizen.
  • Still shooting in the day, there will be establishing shots, worms-eye view, tracking, POV, and canted angles looking up at the towering building structures. We will be hoping to capture the famous places of London throughout the duration the middle class citizen is in frame.
  • The next change will be between the middle class and upper class citizens. This will take place in a restaurant, when the middle classs person is sitting down and a POV tracking shot of the upper class person walking in stimulates the change. This change over will be shot at dusk.
  • The upper class citizen will be shot at night, with some sped up shots of the traffic and lights.
  • The citizen will go to the rich parts such as Chelsea and Kensington, and enter posh bars and casinos etc.
  • The last few moments of the track are slow tempo and we have decided to shoot the wealthy citizen driving a sophisticated, expensive car through the streets of upper class London shot in slow motion, and have the lights blurred across the scene. This gives the audience a chance to realise that the upper class person has been successful and is now enjoying the high life.
  • The swap between the three citizens represent the different classes in life. The idea is very disjunctive to the music, lyrics and audio, but there is a narrative which the audience can understand and the message delivered can be interpreted in different ways.
